Stockbridge Library Tile Floor

The historic library in Stockbridge, Massachusetts, was restored and updated in 2015 with a new entrance addition. I was commissioned to design a tile rondel for the lower level entrance to the Stockbridge Museum and Archives in this new space to commemorate a donor family. I immediately asked Berkshire ceramic artist Ben Evans to work on this project with me. He was my advisor in the design project, and I became his assistant in creating the tiles in his studio. This process included enlarging the design drawings; rolling, cutting and hand carving tile models from which plaster molds were made; pressing tiles from the molds; bisque firing; hand painting glaze colors mixed by Ben; and the final firing.
